Right-Wing Hissy-Fit

BSAOh boy! Now those pesky little boy scouts have gone and done it! What the hell was that Board thinking? Now they have the whole of the right-wing fundies on a tear! Good Grief! Imagine doing something like allowing kids who happen to be gay to become a Boy Scout! Why, that flies in the face of all that is holy! I mean, after-all, they will all go camping together, and use the same showers, and, you know, it might rub off! They might recruit otherwise straight, upstanding boys into their lifestyle!

With the ruling of the Boy Scouts of America which will now allow openly gay boys into their organization, the bigoted asshats on the right are on the warpath. They have taken to Twitter and Facebook and other social media to condemn the decision and they aren’t mincing any words.

Rick-perry3Rick Perry, the Dominionist Governor of Texas who favors secession claimed to be “Saddened” that the “BSA bends to the whim of political correctness.” I guess he would rather the BSA continue to discriminate against countless young men who want nothing more than to have some camaraderie with their peers.

birdenstineOklahoma Representative Jim Birdenstine, who was equally offended, grumbled “If the Left were truly tolerant, they would tolerate the Boy Scouts being who they have always been.” That’s right, Jim, we should have just allowed them to continue their bigoted practices and to teach our children to be just like you.

EricksonErick Erickson, the ultra conservative blogger from Red State claimed to have no problem with the BSA making that decision and then told us that “I honestly cannot see me now enrolling my son in the scouts as a result.” Well, that’s too bad. Depriving your child of that experience is a shame. Just think what he could have learned.

FischerOf course, Bryan Fischer from the American Family hate group just had to weigh in. In his usual irascible manner, Bryan said “BSA now stands for Boy Sodomizers of America, because that’s what will happen. Mark my words.” You know, one has to wonder about Bryan. The man doth protest too much.

tony-perkins-photoThen there is Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council who whined “Boy Scouts’ Decision Another Casualty of Moral Compromise.” Of course, we know that the guardians of morality don’t consider how ‘moral’ it is to oppress and discriminate against an entire group of people. That must be a Christian thing?

Matt-BarberDominionist attorney Matt Barber from the Liberty Council issued a rather touching statement, Boy Scouts of America: Born February 8, 1910. Died, May 23, 2013. RIP.” Uh, correct me if I am wrong, but Barber’s specialty is “Constitutional Law.” Since when is it Constitutional to infringe upon a person’s rights?

There were others, all of them similar. Immediately following the BSA’s decision a group of members of the BSA, including parents, scoutmasters, Eagle Scouts, and other leaders announced they would start another group which would adhere to their “timeless values.” They issued the following statement:

OMHSTATEMENT

“It is with great sadness and deep disappointment that we recognize on this day that the most influential youth program in America has turned a tragic corner. The vote today to allow open and avowed homosexuality into Scouting will completely transform it into an unprincipled and risky proposition for parents. It is truly a sad day for Scouting.

The Boy Scouts of America has a logo that bears the phrase ‘Timeless Values.’ Today, the BSA can no longer use this phrase in good faith. It has demonstrated by its actions that the organization’s values are not timeless, and instead they are governed by changing tides of polls, politics and public opinion.

The saddest part of today’s decision is what the organization is teaching our children and young people in the program.

The BSA is teaching our kids that when your values become unpopular, just change them.

The BSA is teaching our kids that when your convictions are challenged, just cave to peer pressure.

The BSA is teaching our kids that public opinion polls are more important than principles.

Today, the BSA is teaching our kids that you should not stand up for what is right instead you should stand up for what is popular.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to “prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law.”

The BSA is teaching our kids through its new mission that we don’t make ethical and moral choices through the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law but we make them like an unprincipled politician does, by putting your finger in the air and seeing which way the wind is blowing or by looking at the latest polling results.

What kind of a message are we sending to young people about being brave when its top adult leaders don’t even have the courage to stand up to the pressure of a militant lobby when the bullies in Washington DC, Hollywood or even some of their own renegade councils start pressuring and harassing them?

Each and every one of the thousands of Scouting families that have supported and followed our movement must now make a very difficult decision. We respect the right for each parent and family to decide whether they will continue their membership in the Boy Scouts of American or not.

Many, like me and my family, cannot continue to support an organization more concerned with the intolerant demands of activists while compromising the safety and security of the young people they swore to serve. In July of last year, after a two year study from 2010 to 2012, the BSA’s eleven member task force unanimously concluded that their existing policy on this issue was “the absolute best policy for the Boy Scouts of America.” Suddenly, less than a year later, that is abruptly reversed.

We hoped to keep sex and politics out of Scouting. Now we grieve for those young boys who will not have the wonderful traditions and experiences that so many of us have had in Scouting.

Despite this setback, we will look to the future. I am pleased to announce that OnMyHonor.Net along with other likeminded organizations, parents and BSA members, are announcing a coalition meeting that will take place next month in Louisville, Kentucky. There we will discuss the creation of a new character development organization for boys. While the meeting will be private, your voice is very important to us and will be represented there. We will host and facilitate a national coalition meeting of former BSA parents and other youth leaders who wish to return to truly timeless values that once made the BSA great. We welcome your comments as we develop our plans. Please share your thoughts with us at Contact@OnMyHonor.Net

We grieve today, not because we are faced with leaving Scouting, but because the Boy Scouts of America has left us. Its leadership has turned its back on 103 years of abiding by a mission to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices. Instead, it is embarking on a pathway of social experimentation that we believe will place at risk the very youth the organization is entrusted to serve, while rendering as hollow the tenets of the Scout Oath. Many of us find that unacceptable, and we have a desire to explore how we might serve families and young people at the highest standard originally intended by Scouting’s founder, Robert Baden-Powell.”

The new organization can be found at On My Honor.

It would appear that no matter how hard we try to eliminate or allieviate the racism, bigotry, and hatred in this country there will always be those who cloak themselves in the American flag, thump their Bibles, carry their crosses, and claim to be virtuous. However, the tide is turning – a little slower than we would like – but turning just the same.

THE VOICE OF TEXAS

THE VOICE OF TEXAS
By Nicole Nichols

Whenever I think of Texas the first thing that comes to mind is its’ slogan “A Whole Other Country.” The second thing that creeps into my thoughts is Governor Rick Perry. You know, the guy who God talks to, who ran for President and showed his ass, the one who really wants Texas to be a “whole other country.”

Governor Rick Perry

Governor Rick Perry

Now, I know a lot of Texans and have spent a bit of time there, as well. It’s interesting to me that I have never met a Texan who claims to support Perry or who believes that good ole’ Rick speaks for them. That’s not to say that he doesn’t have some brain-dead, moth-balled closeted supporters – he does – I just haven’t run into any. Maybe that’s because I haven’t attended any of his prayer rallies or John Hagee’s side-show circus.

Just as attitudes have changed dramatically over the years concerning same-sex marriage, the attitudes of voters are changing as well. However, someone like Perry who believes himself to be chosen by God for great things just doesn’t get it. Just the other day he was asked about the same-sex marriage cases that the Supreme Court is reviewing and he had the temerity to say: “As recently as a constitutional amendment that passed – I believe, with 76 percent of the vote. The people of the state of Texas, myself included, believe marriage is between one man and one woman.”

Gee, Rick, the amendment of which you speak was passed 8 years ago, and in case you haven’t heard…the times they are a-changin’. Not only are attitudes toward marriage changing, but also the attitudes of voters who are sick and tired of politicians who while demonstrating consummate ignorance claim to speak for them and an entire state of people. And…just as new lines are being drawn on social issues, politicians who are adrift in a sea of hubris are meeting their fate in the voting booth.

Rick Perry is rapidly loosing his influence and sway over Texas voters, and while he dreams of the 2016, presidential races, at home he is failing badly in the polls. According to a recent Texas Tribune poll, only 26% of Texas voters say they will definitely support Perry.

The tide is turning. Regardless of which way the Supreme Court rules or doesn’t, public sentiment is changing course. Of course, this will throw the dominionists, the Republicans, and the evangelicals into apoplectic fits of rage and the fallout will be significant, but so be it. Just as the success of Civil Rights Movement still doesn’t sit well with those on the extreme right, this new coming of age in America will only exacerbate the angst experienced by the fearful and the ignorant Rick Perry’s who believe that Jesus Christ was an anal retentive, hate-mongering Republican.
