Christians At War Over Christmas

war on christmasWell, it’s the holiday season again, and, of course, the sky is falling! The religious right-wing zealots are absolutely out of their minds with visions of Jesus dancing in their heads. After all, Christ is under attack, and Christians are being persecuted, and by God this is a Christian nation!

“Atheists” are aspiring to deconstruct the whole idea of Christmas and the Christmas tradition, don’t you know!

We seem to go through this every year, it seems. And, now, those who are creating the biggest stink over the use of “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas” have been getting a little pushback from the more mainstream and rational Christians. That resistance to this ridiculous tirade has the zealots really pissed off.

One of the groups leading the pack of disgruntled Evangelical’s is the American Family Association, an extreme hate group who continuously spews its venom toward all things non-Christian, non-heterosexual, secular, and logical.

According to Right-Wing Watch, an article in this month’s AFA journal makes the following statement:

“… over the last couple of years, AFA has found itself being targeted – either implicitly or explicitly – by other Christians. Whether it’s from Rachel Held Evans on the evangelical left or Russell Moore on the evangelical right, some Christians have chided and condemned AFA’s pro-Christmas campaigns.”

Finally, it appears that the “Real Christians” are starting to speak out against the intolerance, bigotry, and outlandish behaviors of the extremists who have cast a very dark cloud over the whole of the Christian religion.

With that in mind, I will take this opportunity to wish all of you a very Happy Holiday Season or a very Merry Christmas. However you celebrate the season (or don’t) is fine with us at Crooked Crosses.

A CONGRESSMAN, A COUPLE OF WHITE SUPREMACISTS, AND AN ASSAULT RIFLE – OH MY!

A CONGRESSMAN, A COUPLE OF WHITE SUPREMACISTS, AND AN ASSAULT RIFLE – OH MY!

Just An Inside Glimpse At the Mindset of Extremist Right-Wing Politics

SteveStockmanReturning Congressman Steve Stockman (R-TX) has some new friends, at least we think they are new. You know, he couldn’t have picked a more disreputable group of people to run around with, but then he really isn’t the sharpest pencil in the box.

Stockman was born and raised in Michigan, but migrated to Texas – which is a pretty good place for a born-again, Southern Baptist, Christian extremist. I’m sure he fits right in with the Rick Perry crowd.  He previously served for a couple of years in the House of Representatives back in 1995-1997. He lost his next bid for the seat in a run-off election.

After his brief stint in Congressman he took a faculty job with the uber-conservative Leaderhip Institute where he was engaged in training young people in right-wing extremism.

Bushmaster AR15Now he’s back. Having won a seat in Congress again, Stockman has been plying his trade as an extremist extraordinaire. Upset with Obama after the Sandy Hook school shootings and his belief that the President’s number one agenda is to take everyone’s guns away, Stockman decided to fight back. On his website he held a drawing for a free Bushmaster AR15 Rifle to be given away on Independence Day.

His campaign website also offers bumper stickers that read, “If babies had guns, they wouldn’t be aborted.”

Well, ever the zealot, Steve Stockman has now hooked up with Michael Peroutka’s Institute on the Constitution as well as Larry Pratt’s Gun Owners of America. Stockman, along with the two groups has filed an Amicus Brief in United States v. Abramski.

The case is one based around Abramski giving false information when purchasing a firearm. According to the complaint:

“When his uncle, Angel Alvarez, expressed a desire for a Glock 19 handgun, Bruce Abramski offered to make the purchase. As a former police officer, Abramski received a professional discount for the gun purchase that his uncle was not eligible for. When making the purchase, Abramski filled out ATF Form 4473, which contained several “yes-or-no” questions. One of the questions asked whether he was the actual purchaser of the firearm. The question also stated, “Warning: You are not the actual buyer if you are acquiring the firearm(s) on behalf of another person. If you are not the actual buyer, the dealer cannot transfer the firearm(s) to you.” Abramski answered “yes” to the question, buying the Glock 19 for his uncle. Alvarez mailed Abramski a check for the price of the handgun, and Abramski transferred the weapon to his uncle in Pennsylvania through a licensed firearms dealer.”

Abramski pled guilty, but reserved his right to appeal, which is what he is doing. The Amicus Brief, in short, makes the following claim:

“At the heart of the Government’s case against Mr. Abramski is a “straw purchase” theory based neither in law nor regulation that it is impermissible for a person to purchase a firearm from an FFL if the transferee is acting as an agent for a third party, who furnished the funds for the purchase, even if both parties are eligible under state and federal law to possess a firearm.”

The rub isn’t that Abramski is appealing, or that Stockman and others filed the brief. The problem with all of this is that a United States Congressman has teamed up with individuals and organizations known to be White Supremacists.

Michael PeroutkaMichael Peroutka is a high-ranking board member in the League of the South. For a description of the LOS, we turn to the Southern Poverty Law Center which has this to say:

“The League of the South is a neo-Confederate group that advocates for a second Southern secession and a society dominated by “European Americans.” The league believes the “godly” nation it wants to form should be run by an “Anglo-Celtic” (read: white) elite that would establish a Christian theocratic state and politically dominate blacks and other minorities. Originally founded by a group that included many Southern university professors, the group lost its Ph.D.s as it became more explicitly racist. The league denounces the federal government and northern and coastal states as part of “the Empire,” a materialist and anti-religious society.”

From the LOS website:

“We also encourage individuals and families to personally secede from the corrupt and corrupting influence of post-Christian culture in America. We call this ‘abjuring the realm,’ and it’s a real and dramatic first step all of us can take by simply withdrawing our support of and allegiance to a regime that has imperiled our future. … Once our Southern culture is re-established, then the political issues will begin to take care of themselves. Good leaders flow naturally out of a healthy culture; however, power-hungry, self-seeking politicians are all we can expect from the debased cultural climate we have today.”

Peroutka’s Institute On The Constitution claims that its mission is to “help individuals across America to understand and appreciate their own history and heritage by reacquainting them with the worldview and vision of our Founding Fathers. Michael Peroutka’s “worldvision” is that of a dominionist Christian. According to Peroutka, the Separation of Church and State “refers to the fact that the jurisdiction and functions of these two God-ordained institutions are separate and distinct from each other. What it doesn’t mean that either of these institutions is independent from God and His law.”

It’s interesting to note that in the 2008 Presidential elections Perouka was being considered for Ron Paul’s Vice Presidential pick.

Larry PrattLarry Pratt and Gun Owner’s of America ranks right up there with Peroutka and his cult. In many ways, Pratt is even more of a threat. The Southern Poverty Law Center tells us:

“Larry Pratt, a gun rights absolutist whose Gun Owners of America (GOA) has been described as “eight lanes to the right” of the National Rifle Association, may well be the person who brought the concept of citizen militias to the radical right.

“In 1990, Pratt wrote a book, Armed People Victorious, based on his study of “citizen defense patrols” used in Guatemala and the Philippines against Communist rebels — patrols that came to be known as death squads for their murderous brutality.

“Picturing these groups in rosy terms, Pratt advocated similar militias in the United States — an idea that finally caught on when he was invited for a meeting of 160 extremists, including many famous white supremacists, in 1992.

“It was at that meeting, hosted in Colorado by white supremacist minister Pete Peters, that the contours of the militia movement were laid out.

“Pratt, whose GOA has grown since its 1975 founding to some 150,000 members today, hit the headlines in a big way when his associations with Peters and other professional racists were revealed, convincing arch-conservative Pat Buchanan to eject him as a national co-chair of Buchanan’s 1996 presidential campaign.

“The same year, it emerged that Pratt was a contributing editor to a periodical of the anti-Semitic United Sovereigns of America, and that his GOA had donated money to a white supremacist attorney’s group.

“Pratt is today close to the extremist Constitution Party and its radical theology.”

The “radical theology” that they have ascribed to the Constitution Party is, decidedly, Dominionist. Interestingly, Pratt has served as a board member of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), as well as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. He comes to us straight out of the Dominionist, and secretive, Council for National Policy.

On another side note, Pratt is a close ally of Ron Paul and supported him in his bid for President. According to Ron Paul Gun Owner’s of America is “The only no-compromise gun lobby in Washington.”

Gun Owner’s of America currently has over 300,00 members.

Steve Stockman is the sterotypical ReBiblican politician. His campaign endorsements read like a who’s who of the extremist right, including: Tim & Beverley LaHaye; Richard Viguerie; Donald Wildmon of the American Family Association (Another hate group); Michael Farris, Founder of the Home School Legal Defense Fund and Patrick Henry College; Ted Nugent; and Pastor Chuck Baldwin.

This is who Texans in the 36th Congressional District elected to represent them. There are over 200 others who grace our House of Representatives with their radical, extremist presence. In truth, it should scare the hell out of any sane, rational American. We can only hope that the next election will change the encroaching Christian Nationalist ideology that continues to erode our liberties and our very way of life.

The Highest Form of Ignorance

Nothing in the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

One has to wonder just what Martin Luther King, Jr. would have thought about those who would oppress a whole group of people based on sexual orientation. We have to wonder how he would have responded to the concientious stupidity of the radical right wing hate mongers who spew their venom while attempting to persecute homosexuals in the name of God.

Last week, Mat Staver and Sean Akers of the Liberty Counsel demonstrated their ignorance and stupidity, yet again, when they appeared on the Faith and Freedom show hosted by Staver. Outraged that a U.S. Department of Agriculture promoted a Gay Pride event, Staver claimed that the newsletter” is proof that the USDA intimidates employees if they don’t participate.” Akers, on the other hand, argued that the agency is using Saul Alinsky tactics “to wage a quiet revolution” and a “culture war.” – See more at: http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/staver-obama-violating-first-amendment-affirming-immoral-and-unhealthy-homosexuality#sthash.4LzP75hJ.dpuf

They then had their panties in a bunch over a brochure that had been published by DOJPride, which is an LGBT rights group comprised of Department of Justice employees. The brochure was aimed at creating an all-inclusive work environment which Staver and Akers claim “cripples free speech.”

According to Staver, “Essentially what we have in this administration is an LGBT affirmative action program. This is the most outrageous violation of conscience and the First Amendment that I have seen within any federal agency to force people’s conscience to affirm something that historically has been, and according to natural law and biblical revelation, is unnatural, immoral and unhealthy.”

But, the Liberty Counsel is only one of the organizations working overtime to vilify the gay community. We certainly cannot ignore The Family Research Council and their leader, the infamous Tony Perkins who believes that the alarming number of sexual assaults in the military can be blamed upon gays and the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

And then there is poor old Mike Huckabee who teamed up with Penny Nance from Concerned Women for America to bemoan the current state of affairs and warn that people who live in states with marriage equality have “lost their rights,” and that every fear that people have had about gay rights is now coming true.

Now, not to be upstaged, Pat Robertson just had to add his two cents to the mix of obtusely ignorant rants on the 700 Club today. From Right Wing Watch:

Following the BSA’s decision to lift its ban on openly gay youth, Robertson on the 700 Club today said that it is a “terrible shame” that a “tiny minority” is “willing to rip apart the framework of traditional marriage; to rip apart an organization that has done so much good for young people, the Boy Scouts; to rip apart certain of these other things that we have counted as important in our society; all for one thing: that the way they do sex will be accepted in the mainstream of society.”

These are some of those people who are considered to be “the chosen ones,” the prophets, the apostles within the Dominionist Movement. Maybe they aren’t familiar with the Bard. Perhaps Shakespeare could enlighten them:

“Ignorance is the curse of God; knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven.” (William Shakespeare

Or, perhaps they would be better off to shut the hell up rather than show their ignorance to the rest of the world.

The highest form of ignorance is when you reject something you don’t know anything about. (Wayne Dyer)
