Rediscover God In America? I Didn’t Know He/She Was Lost!

civic2There ought to be some sort of litmus test for those who wish to represent the American people and this country. I mean, after all, they should be able to demonstrate some basic knowledge – you know, the stuff that is taught in Civics 101. Perhaps, they should even have some sort of geographical understanding of the world? Is it too much to ask that those in Congress have a general grasp of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the basis upon which this country was established before they are allowed to represent us to the rest of the world?

This past week, the “Rediscovering God in America event was held in Iowa. Now, I didn’t know that God had ever been “undiscovered,” but, my ignorance aside, the event was part of a 12-state strategy that is aimed at turning out those conservative, evangelical voters in the 2014, elections. It is but one of many planned events presented by David Lane’s American Renewal Project.

Of course, we know that the Christian Right pretty much threw in the towel in the 2012, Presidential election once it became evident that none the numerous Dominionist candidates they slated would stand up to the scrutiny of the American public. They then threw their support and their money behind the Congressional, state, and local politicians who would do their bidding.

In the meantime, they began work behind closed doors on the much coveted and anticipated 2014, and 2016, campaign cycles hoping to marginalize all candidates not considered to be of a “Godly nature.”

While those of us who have been aware of these plans and maneuverings have been vigilantly watching and reporting, much of mainstream America has no inkling of what is taking place right under their not-so-watchful noses. That’s to be expected – and that’s the way the Dominionist like it. However, it has been rather amusing to watch as the internet bloggers display absolute shock and outrage when they realize that Senators, Congressmen and other politicians are attending, supporting and speaking at such events.

Last week, Senators and presidential hopefuls, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz were featured speakers at the Iowa event – and the blogosphere went wild. Why? Does anyone honestly believe that there are not those in our halls of power who do not adhere to the separation of church and state, or who do not have an agenda that coincides with the extremist right wing? There are currently 41 Senators who fit that bill, and several more who are sympathetic to the far-right ideology of Christian Nationalism, and who insist that this nation is a Christian nation.

David Lane’s American Renewal Project has targeted 12 States: Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, South Carolina, Alaska, Arkansas, North Carolina, Nevada, South Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia. Several of those states will have Senate races in 2014.

david laneDavid Lane likes to fly under the radar, however his hand can be found in many of the events that have been planned around the country. He has strong connections to national and state politicians and is considered one of the most influential people in the dominionist arena. The American Renewal Project is largely funded by the American Family Association, a designated hate group based in Tupelo, Mississippi. Lane has been around for at least 20 years and works with numerous Christian leaders. He was largely responsible for Rick Perry’s prayer rally and is a close ally of Perry.

Lane is anti-abortion, anti-homosexual, anti-non-Christian, believes that women should be submissive to their husbands, and has been called a Christian evangelical political “Kingmaker.” You might recall that Senator Rand Paul made a trip to Israel earlier in the year. Well, that trip was organized by none other than David Lane. According to Lane:

“This trip to meet with Israelis, Arabs and Palestinians is absolutely the first step in his 2016 White House campaign.”

Additionally, the trip was financed by the American Family Association. As mentioned earlier, The AFA has been designated a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its demonizing propaganda against LGBT individuals. Of course, we know that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to Ron and Rand Paul, but I wonder if Rand will conviently claim that he had no idea who was behind the trip just as his father had no idea who wrote the racist and homophobic articles under his by-line.

paul laneAn interesting side note to all of this is that David Lane’s daughter is employed by Rand Paul as his press assistant. Unlike Daddy Paul who often tried to bamboozle the public when it came to his dominionist views, Rand embraces his extremism.

Ted Cruz, the new Senator from Texas, is no different. A strong ally of Rick Perry and the far-right-wing extremists, Cruz told the audience in Iowa:

“Book of Isaiah tells us: My people perish for lack of knowledge. Edmund Burke put the points a little differently when he said the only thing necessary for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing. And the prophet Ezekiel charged us, son of man, you are a watchman for the house of Israel.”

Ted Cruz After what has been called a “fiery speech,” Cruz walked into the audience where the pastors met him, laid their hands upon him, and prayed over him.

The list of politicians and leaders who are associated with David Lane is quite lengthy – astonishingly so. Right now, the seeds are being sown for the upcoming elections. There is little doubt that, given the political climate in this country, the dominionists will succeed in placing more of what they consider to be the “right kind of Christians” in seats of power. How many more, is up to the American people.

Considering the stealth nature of the maneuvers of the Dominionist Movement, their abilities to market and rebrand themselves, and the gullibility of mainstream America, stopping them will be a daunting task. We already have a list of current Senators who fit their mold. Within the next few weeks, we hope to have a list of current Representatives. It is incumbent upon us to be watchful, not just in the Congressional races, but in our state and local races as well.

  1. You can count Doug LaMalfa, California’s District One freshman Representative, a Dominionist shill. Guaranteed. He’s a farmer/subsidy check recipient and some sort of board member of his local Christian charter school. He was handed the Congressional seat by his predecessor, a Mormon who had held the office over twenty years before retiring. I campaigned against him with everything I had, but he got all kinds of money from Carl Rove, et al, and we just couldn’t overcome the sheer volume of elderly and low information voters in this district– even after he said that climate change was what was happening outside that changed the leaves from green to orange. Seriously. He said that in his one and only televised “debate” which was really a Q&A, NOT a debate. Hopefully, we can convince our candidate to run again and then defeat the big jerk, but the odds are against unseating an incumbent, no matter how stupid he is or how his voting record hurts his constituents. This isn’t my first rodeo. All we can do is run a campaign that EDUCATES the masses, a rather difficult thing to do when it seems people’s attention spans are shorter with every passing year.

  2. Calichef – thanks for that! I just ran across LaMalfa yesterday while building this list of representatives. He was one I wasn’t familiar with, probably because he hasn’t been in office for very long. It didn’t take long, however, to find out that he certainly belongs on the list.

You are so right – I often say that the attention span of mainstream America is no longer than a gnat. Educating people gets more and more difficult as the years pass. It’s amazing to me that people are so gullible and that their vote means so little to them. They vote on appearance, charisma, and a good line of B.S.

We need more people like you. Thanks for your activism!

    • I really had a hard time getting over LaMalfa’s election. I was horribly depressed for weeks afterward. I just couldn’t believe the voters would be so STUPID as to vote this blowhard, career politician (state government) and well known bully who was under investigation by the FEC for making a FAKE website against one of his primary opponents. They voted for that bloviating jackass over an intelligent, thoughtful, TAX ATTORNEY was beyond my ken, you know? Just thinking about it now saddens and frustrates me. If you’d like to hear my interview with candidate Jim Reed, you can go here: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/10/23/1148948/-Podcast-of-Jim-Reed-Interview . You can read a few other political essays I’ve written there, too, if you’d like. Oh, and LaMalfa belongs to the Evangelical Free Church, but I’ve never really been clear on what that is, although I think I’ve been told that they do that “speaking in tongues” thing that really shows the religious insanity, IMHO.

  3. Cali – I understand that kind of depression over voter stupidity – I have experienced it many times over here in Oklahoma.

The Evangelical Free Church IS a dominionist outfit. It’s headquartered in Minnesota and is pretty big in the Midwest, however, California has the largest concentration. They generally believe that people are born in a sinful condition and must seek salvation. Of course, the only way to be saved is through acceptance of Christ as your personal savior, and the only way into heaven is through that acceptance.

They believe that the Bible is infallible – it is the inerrant word of God. They believe in the Great Commission and that it is their duty to spread Christianity throughout the world. They are premillennial, meaning that they believe that Christ will physically return to the earth and take the righteous back up to heaven with him leaving all others behind.

Since the embrace much of the Charismatic Christian beliefs, I am assuming that they do practice speaking in tongues, or glossolalia.

As to Malfa – 2014 is just around the corner. Have they started any kind of campaigning yet?

    • I don’t think Reed has decided whether to run again, or not. I’m sure they’ll let me know when it’s official.
