Tomorrow is Sunday – church day for Christians, but chances are it won’t be just your ordinary go-to-meetin’ Sunday morning. Now, it’s not Palm Sunday, nor Easter, and it’s just too hot to be Christmas. What it is, is another Pulpit Freedom Sunday. But, wait…it’s not the Sunday before any major elections, you know, where certain preachers decide to test the waters and the laws by jeopardizing their tax-exempt status by preaching politics from the pulpit. So, just what has gotten them into such a frenzy this time? It’s all about you gay people out there who think that you deserve the same rights as everyone else. Just what the hell are you thinking?
Tomorrow morning, and perhaps all through the months of June and July, ministers across this country will be bludgeoning, brow-beating, and bullying their congregations with anti-homosexual rhetoric. Extolling the virtues of heterosexual marriage and family while demonizing anything that doesn’t resemble what they define as “traditional,” these pulpit masters will take you to the river of Biblical dogma and anoint you with their interpretation of Old Testament values. Never mind the teachings of Christ.
This will be the Alliance Defending Freedom’s sixth Pulpit Freedom Sunday and they are boasting that “Nearly 1,100 pastors in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have registered to participate.” Additionally, registration will remain open through the months of June and July.
The Alliance Defending Freedom (previously the Alliance Defense Fund), is one of scores of conservative far-right Christian organizations dedicated to fight Christian persecution because, after-all, they are the down-trodden and oppressed in this country.
The ADF was founded in 1993, by Bill Bright (Campus Crusade for Christ), Larry Burkett (Crown Financial Ministries), James Dobson (Focus on the Family), D. James Kennedy (Coral Ridge Ministries), Marlin Maddoux (International Christian Media) and Donald Wildmon (American Family Association. All but Dobson and Wildmon have passed on to Dominionist heaven – oh yes, there must be such a thing because they would never share their space with those of us who aren’t the “right kind of Christians.”
Currently Alan Sears heads up this outfit. Sears was the Executive Director of the Meese Commission which investigated pornography in this country. That investigation managed to frighten over 17,000 retailers into pulling both Playboy and Penthouse magazines from their shelves for fear they would be labeled “pornography dealers.”
There is little doubt that the ADF is promoting a Christian Supremacist Agenda. From their website:
“We must continue the fight for religious liberty, so that the life-changing message of Jesus Christ can be proclaimed and transform our culture. Each win for the Body of Christ is a loss for the opposition. It’s that black and white.”
Cutural transformation is their objective. Dominionism is their goal.
