The Family Research Council – Hate & Bigotry Wrapped Up In Religious Zealotry

The Family Research Council

Hate & Bigotry Wrapped Up In Religious Zealotry

By Nicole Nichols

logoThere is little wonder that the Family Research Council was designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center three years ago. The real puzzlement lies in the fact that even after such a designation the center has done nothing to ameliorate those charges and everything to live up to that characterization.

During the recent flap over the Boy Scouts of America’s consideration to allow homosexual youth and scout masters into their rank and file, something that shouldn’t even be a question mark, the Family Research Council and its members were sent into paroxysms of rage. The anti-gay, anti-abortion, anti-non-Christian group wasted no time in pooling the resources of dozens of other similar groups together to publish this full-page advertisement in USA Today reaching readers throughout the country:

Once the decision had been tabled until May, the Council celebrated and thanked all of those who supported them as President Tony Perkins issued the following statement:

tony 2“However, it is not enough that they postpone a decision. Instead, the BSA board should publicly re-affirm their current standards, as they did just last July. We look forward to continuing to work with scouting parents, leaders of the faith-based organizations that charter over two-thirds of the packs and the troops. We will also continue to communicate with the Scout leadership about the grave consequences that would result if they were to compromise their moral standards in the face of threats from corporate elites and homosexual activists.”

Perkins has a long standing history of hatred and bigotry toward all things non-Christian and non-heterosexual. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Liberty University, an Evangelical Christian school in Virginia, that steeps its students in creationism and dominionist dogma.

Perkins went on to become a police officer, a television reporter, and a two-term legislator in the Louisiana House of Representatives. While in office, Perkins pushed for prayer in public schools and to prevent what he called “Censorship of America’s Christian Heritage.” He authored the nation’s first covenant marriage law which would permit divorce only in cases of physical abuse, abandonment, imprisonment, or after two years of separation.

Believing that judicial nominees were being blocked by U.S. Senate Democrats, who were waging a war against orthodox religious views, and that the nominees were being persecuted for their Christian beliefs, Perkins organized Justice Sunday, an attempt to mobilize the Evangelical Christian base into support of Christian judicial nominees.

Klansman David Duke

Klansman David Duke

Tony Perkins is no saint. In 1996, he was campaign manager for Woody Jenkins who was running against Mary Landrieu. He paid a whopping $82,500 to Ku Klux Klansman David Duke for Duke’s mailing list, a stunt that ended up in the campaign being fined for false disclosure after his attempt to hide the payment to the nefarious racist.

But, his elbow-rubbing with white supremacists didn’t end there as he continued his bigotry with the Council of Conservative Citizens, a group which has also been named a hate group by the SPLC and which outwardly considers black people as a “retrograde species of humanity.”

Perkins has been the head honcho at the Family Research Council since 2003. The Council is an offshoot of James Dobson’s Focus on the Family. Because of the political nature of the Council, the founders believed it might threaten the tax-exempt status of Focus on the Family, hence the separation of the two entities.

The first president of the FRC was Gary Bauer, an evangelical Christian, politician and Ronald Reagan acolyte of equal intolerance to Perkins.

The FRC is extremely active in the political arena and in policy making decisions. With a membership of approximately a half-million, and a cadre of heavy-hitting, well-heeled board members and staff, they enter the halls of government on local, state, and federal levels with a fair amount of clout.

Focusing on all things Christian, the FRC is virulently anti-abortion, anti-separation of church and state, anti-homosexual, anti-immigrant, and anti-pornography. They are one of the leading organizations in funding the conservative movement. Every Fall, the FRC Action group holds the Values Voters Summit, comprised of Christian activists and voters in Washington, DC. where conservative  presidential and congressional hopefuls can be heard and evaluated. In 2012, those who participated included: Rep. Michelle Bachmann; Gary Bauer; Glenn Beck; Gen. William Boykin; Governor Jan Brewer; Rep. Eric Cantor; Sen. Ted Cruz; Sen. Jim DeMint; Rep. Jeff Fortenberry; Governor Mike Huckabee; Rep. Tim Huelskamp; Rep. Jim Jordan; Rep. Steve King; Rep. James Lankford; Governor Bob McDonnell; Lt. Col. Oliver North; Sen. Rand Paul; Governor Mitt Romney; Rep. Paul Ryan; and Sen. Rick Santorum.

This is but a sampling of those who the FRC has great influence over. The Complete roster can be seen here: http://www.valuesvotersummit.org/speakers.

During the 2012, summit, a group Dream Act activists and GetEQUAL activists staged a protest during Mitt Romney’s speech. Apparently, the good Christians present weren’t called upon to feel very Christ-like on that evening and began throwing punches and shoving the young protestors.  Brent Bozell was introducing a speaker and from the podium he told the protestors to leave and told the audience “if you see any protestors, beat ‘em up.” Felipe Matos, one of the protestors,  gave this account:

“As soon as we started our action and pulled out a giant rainbow flag in full sight, conference participants morphed into an angry mob. Some screamed, “Our values are not killing you! It’s AIDS, and you’re spreading it!” Others told us, “Get out of my country!” even though Sean Watkins, one of our activists from Ohio, served in the military during the Iraq War. It was horrifying to see participants and security guards attacking one of our lead organizers in D.C., Charles Butler, pushing and choking him so much that he was out of breath and fell to the floor a few times.”

Jerry Boykin

Jerry Boykin

Recently, General Jerry Boykin was chosen to fill the seat of Executive Vice President for the Family Research Council. Boykin brings a whole new dimension the Council as he is well known for his noxious Islamophobic views. As a 36-year veteran of the military, and a former U.S. deputy undersecretary of defense under Donald Rumsfeld, Boykin likened the War on Terror to a battle against Satan, claimed that George W. Bush was put into office by God, and was censured by the Army for giving speeches at various Christian events while in full-dress uniform.

During his tenure, he ranted that Muslims hate America, and stated that the military is recruiting a spiritual army that will draw strength from a greater power to destroy their enemies. According to Boykin, Islam is not a religion and does not deserve First Amendment protection.

In Jerry Boykin’s world,  mosques should be banned in the United States.  After all,  “we are at war” against the threat of Islam and the Muslim Brotherhood, which he says is trying to implement Sharia law in the U.S.  Of course, his history of incendiary remarks drew a lot of heat recently and he was forced to withdraw from delivering a speech at the 2012 National Prayer Breakfast, held at West Point in February, thanks to a lot of pressure from the good folks at the Military Religious Freedom Foundation.  A few months after that, in July, the FRC hired Boykin as executive vice president. We can only imagine what he will bring to their already hate-filled feast.

Along with the big push against the Boy Scouts of America, the FRC has recently taken up the fight against the Violence Against Women Act. Calling  upon their membership, the FRC sent out an email alert and quoted Phyllis Schlafly who wrote:

schlafly-460x307“[VAWA] has done little or no good for real victims of domestic violence, while its funds have been used to fill feminist coffers and to lobby for feminist objectives and laws. Although every spending bill should be subject to rigorous auditing procedures in order to curb waste and fraud, VAWA has somehow ducked accountability for the [$660 million] a year it doles out to radical feminist organizations.”

The email went on to say:

“Among the bill’s most egregious parts is a provision that would ban funds to grantees who may have religious objections to homosexuality–even if no documented case of refused services has been found. It also includes special assistance for homosexual victims.”

The FRC is a dangerous organization posing a real threat to the very fabric of a multicultural society such as ours. Their every move and motivation is based a dark undercurrent of hatred, ignorance, and fear, and they have become very adept at spreading their pernicious message to millions of vulnerable individuals. Additionally, they have been successful in promoting and electing lawmakers into positions of power who will succumb to the pressure and the purse of those who seek to force us into the abyss of a societal demise.

Divine Scrutiny In The Voting Booth – God Is Watching

Divine Scrutiny In The Voting Booth

God is Watching

By Nicole Nichols

I’ll bet you didn’t know that when you cast your vote in November you were being tested! And, I’ll lay another wager that you had no idea that God was the proctor of that test! How many of you went to the polls realizing that you were under such divine scrutiny?

jacksonPrior to the election, Dominionist Pastor Harry Jackson was making predictions that black and Hispanic Christians would vote for Romney over Obama because of Obama’s stands on abortion and same-sex marriage. He asserted that re-election of President Obama would bring “divine judgment upon America,” and that God was already hard at work trying to remove anyone who favors same sex marriage from office.

Gee, I thought that God was all-powerful and that if he wanted something like that done he could do so with a nod of the head! My bad. Little did I realize that he would have to tax himself to accomplish such a feat. At any rate, if Jackson is correct, God really didn’t do so well this time around.

So now what? I mean, African Americans and Hispanics voted and President Obama was given another shot at running the United States of America. The sky didn’t fall, and the Rapture didn’t come. The Mayan Calendar ended in a whimper and the mighty right-wing zealots are still licking their wounds.

Well, Jackson has somewhat of an apocalyptic view. He now believes that God has redirected his focus from those in office to the voters who just didn’t see things his way. Now God is going to “take out” those who voted for Obama as well as those who “don’t care about homosexual marriage.” He says that God doesn’t like the fact that voters chose “race over grace.”

Jackson serves as Senior Pastor at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland. He is also a regional bishop in the Fellowship of International Churches. He founded and chairs the High Impact Leadership Coalition which is comprised of a group of ministers who oppose abortion and same-sex marriage.

Believing that President Obama is in a “committed relationship” with black voters, Jackson has claimed that relationship has become an “adulterous” one.

Jackson: “The black community is in an adulterous relationship with President Obama,” Jackson said. “He is asking us to stray from the most basic tenets of Scripture – that marriage is an institution made by God for man and woman to become one and procreate. He’s telling us it’s fine to hold onto our beliefs but that it’s also okay to accept his stance on a position that goes against that core belief.”

“This is no different than a married person having a relationship with someone other than their spouse,” said Jackson.

In actuality, Jackson is nothing more than a water boy for the Family Research Council and the National Organization For Marriage. He doesn’t see that because his ego is too fragile. NOM bought him for 20 thousand a year and whenever they need to appeal to the black community, guess who they parade out?  This tactic is certainly nothing new. However, it is demeaning both to Jackson and the black community.

While relaying his predictions on Trinity Broadcasting Network, he stepped into applauding the notion of the Seven Mountains Mandate, which advocates dominion over the seven areas of culture in our society, claiming that Christians will prevail and “replace Obama’s False Church.”

Jackson is but one of many who have been duped and bamboozled into doing the dirty work of the religious right. Much like the drug lords who send children into their gutter to deliver their wares, so as not to get their hands dirty or attract too much attention, the dominionist cult is not much different. When there is a job to do that might end badly, or might garner negative attention they rely on their lackeys to deliver. They truly are master manipulators.

This, however, doesn’t absolve Rev. Harry Jackson. Jackson is an educated man. But, like so many, his ego can be appealed to and stroked enough to make him believe that he truly is somebody who is valued. Just as there are millions of mainstream Christians sitting in the pews of steeple jacked churches across this country every Sunday never realizing that their minds are being warped with the dogma of a cult and by a malevolently twisted cult leader.

Homosexuality – Not A Thing of the Past – Kevin Swanson Reveals What the Future Holds

Homosexuality – Not A Thing of the Past

Kevin Swanson Reveals What the Future Holds

By Nicole Nichols

HOT FLASH: In the early 20th Century, there were only three homosexuals in the world as far as anyone knew! This little known fact was revealed today by Generations Radio guru, Kevin Swanson. And we thought David Barton was the only one who could rewrite history!

kevin swansonOn his radio show, along with side-kick Dave Buehner, Swanson, once again, attempted to gain some attention and pulled that little tidbit out of his gerbil hole along with predictions about what the future has in store for heterosexual Christians who oppose gay marriage.

Swanson lamented to Buehner that in the early 20th Century, “there was a Canadian named Robert Ross, an Englishman named Oscar Wilde, and an American named Walt Whitman who were well known for some level of homosexuality.” He went on the say that “we now have a problem that’s probably about 10,000, if not a 100,000, times worse than it was 100 years ago.”

Last June a ‘study’ emerged from researcher Mark Regnerus out of the University of Texas which suggested that children raised by parents who had, at some point, engaged in homosexual relationships were more likely to be on public assistance, unemployed, or in therapy. The study was immediately debunked and blown off by much of the sane and intelligent research world. However, neither Swanson nor Buehler fit into those categories.

Swanson just had to go there:

Swanson: You need to understand the agenda here. What’s happening is they want homosexuals to be able to be involved in adoption and foster care as much anybody else. So picture a nice little homeschool family, just trying to do the right thing. An anonymous tip comes in, social services swoops in, they grab the kids in the year 2022 and the kids get remanded into a home with homosexuals and these particular homosexuals happen to be tied into NAMBLA and other things. You know what’s going to happen. There will be proper indoctrination into a certain kind of worldview, shall we say.

Buehner: One that the Bible calls for capital punishment. That kind of worldview. It’ll be a tragedy in that house.

Swanson: Yeah. It’s a tragedy. It’s a tragedy. And I think there are a lot of concerned parents. There are concerned Catholic parents. There are concerned homeschool parents. And especially when you get a Regnerus study that comes out and says they’re ten times more likely to be touched sexually by a parent in a homosexual home than, you know, the normal American secular home. Wow. That’s frightening. (Transcript Courtesy of Right Wing Watch)

Well, now that we have all been sufficiently educated as to what the ‘real’ agenda is, I suppose we can consider ourselves forewarned. Perhaps we should hide the children. But, Swanson wasn’t content to stop with the children. Oh no – Christians are an endangered species and will soon fall prey to “apostate Christian churches that have adopted homosexuality.”

Swanson: I don’t know how far this one’s gonna go my friends. I’m not sure the world has ever gone to homosexual marriage. I think Nero tried it, it was very, very odd, very weird, very, very decadent for the Roman Empire. It’s about the worst the Roman Empire ever, ever got, under Nero. And of course the persecutions that came with Nero were intense for the Church of Christ in Rome at that time. Today, it might be a little different because you have a lot of quote-unquote apostate Christian churches that have adopted homosexuality and they will do their best to burn Christians at the stake or do what Nero did, I’m sure, in the years to come, because that’s sort of the history of homosexuals and what they have done ever since they were banging on the doors outside of Lot’s house.

For all of those who wonder what cave this man inhabits, Kevin Swanson is the pastor of the Reformation Church in Castle Rock, Colorado. In actuality, they meet at Clear Sky Elementary School. I guess they want to be close to the children so that they can better protect them. Kevin ran for Governor of Colorado back in 1994 on a pro-life ticket.

Swanson is a major proponent of homeschooling  – gotta keep those kids close to you at all times. After all, those homosexual predators are everywhere! He started Generations with Vision – “a ministry to strengthen homeschool families around the country.” He makes the dubious claim that his radio program reaches families across the United States and in 80 different countries.

Dave BuehnerSwanson’s sidekick, David Buehner is the pastor at Christ the King Church in Larkspur, Colorado. Another advocate of homeschooling, Dave and Kevin are a perfect mesh with each other. Last year, Buehner garnered some attention when he told NBC affiliate KOAA that homosexuality will “destroy society…destroy everything,” and likened homosexuals to cannibals and child molesters. He went on to urge Colorado legislators to remove homosexuals from society.

Buehner doesn’t ascribe to the whole “God is love” concept, you see. He has no time for all of that nonsense. Nope…he’s not “that kind of Christian.” He thought the Ugandan “Kill the Gays Bill” was a stellar idea – after all, in his mind, God really does hate gays:

Buehner: Kevin, if you tell your daughter, your beautiful daughter, ‘Hey, don’t put your hand on the hot stove.’ She can look at that and say, ‘My dad’s a tyrant, he won’t give me liberty to put my hand on the hot stove.’ The fact of the matter is if she puts her hand on the hot stove, bad things will happen. God’s law is like that. God’s law will tell us that if we do things that are bad, bad things will happen. If we put our hands on the stove, we’ll get burned. If we embrace homosexuality, we’ll destroy society, we’ll destroy lives, we’ll destroy families, we’ll destroy everything. It’s not just that God just hates homosexuals, there’s a reason why he hates it. It’s the same reason you would hate your daughter putting her hand on a hot stove.

During their show immediately following the tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, Swanson and Buehner took that opportunity to blame the public school system despite the fact that Lanza, the shooter, had been homeschooled. And their hatred for liberals, evidently rivals their hatred for homosexuals. From that show:

“It is interesting that this is probably one of the most shocking experiences; America has been stunned by what happened,” Swanson said on Generations Radio. “I think there is still somewhat of a conscience. There may not be a conscience about killing the unborn children, there may not be as much of a conscience of killing twenty-seven year olds. But apparently when these bodies of little six and seven year olds riddled by bullets are being examined by the experts, hundreds of thousands and millions of people in America are still somewhat stunned. Apparently they have some level of moral outrage left for the slaughter of the innocents in Newtown, Connecticut.”

“I think you’re exactly right,”Buehner said. “The liberals are proposing that we as a nation follow a kinder, gentler flavor of rebellion against God. They’d like a rebellion that stops a little short of murdering kindergartners. They want the rebellion that involves gay marriage; they want the rebellion that embraces rape and abortion and a media that is in utter defiance against the law of God. That’s the kind of society they want; they want a society that’s in rebellion but not that much rebellion.”

Kevin Swanson and David Buehner are good examples of the plague that has been unleashed upon the Christian community of late. They are the epitome of all that is wrong with the new branding of the Christian religion. They have, obviously, taken the teachings of Christ out of the equation and supplanted a new and obscene dogma that is taking root all too rapidly throughout the air-waves, the pulpits, and ultimately the halls of government. From cherry-picking Biblical versus to justify their distortions to imprecatory prayers upon their perceived enemies, these people are steadfastly and relentlessly preying upon others who seek only to be comforted by their beliefs and their faith.

The Swanson’s and Buehner’s of this world are nothing more than opportunists and showmen. Yet, an alarming number of people have fallen under the spell of these charlatans of Christianity. Perhaps it is out of desperation and despair, or maybe it’s out of fear. Whatever the reason, Kevin and Dave and the others of their ilk are loving every minute of it. After all, it’s profitable.
